Vintage London: Valentines Weekend Events

Good Monday, good people. Except it's not that good, it's blooming cold. And slushy.

Nonetheless, I am here to brighten up your lunchtime (UK only) with news that I definitely should have posted earlier. It's about a rather special event that's taking place next weekend. It's only the first 2013 for The Vintage Mafia's Ric Rac Club!

We put on these parties about once a quarter, the last one being on Halloween last year. This is our second outing at The Blacksmith and the Toffeemaker, a frankly brilliant pub in Islington (where they held the Tweed Run party last year), and it should be a really great night.

We have our favourite eccentric relative Auntie Maureen DJing. She uses real wind-up gramophones and shellac records, spinning hits from the 20s and 30s. She never disappoints.

We also have the fantastic Mr Lee, who often plays at the infamous Ronnie London's in Nottingham, who will be playing a set of Mod specials and Northern Soul hits.

In between these two highly professional DJs, the VM girls, including me, will be playing 1940s and 1950s dance tunes from our collections.

We'll have the Ric Rac Raffle at midnight, with prizes from What Katie Did and Besame (plus whatever else we can rustle up between now and then), and a special cocktail, which we'll announce on Twitter and Facebook. The pub serves delicious 'proper' English food, like homemade scotch eggs, pies and sausage rolls; as well as a range of ales and small batch spirits. Go and have a look at the Vintage Mafia site if you want the full low-down, but in a nutshell it will be brilliant fun and costs a mere £6.

Wear something red!

We'll have Jeni's lovely man Hanson Leatherby taking some pictures, which he did at the Halloween special, HELP! A Zombie Ate My Girdle. Which I completely forgot to post here. So here are a few...

Bethan DJing and being possessed

Young Zackula Pinsent

Amazing costume efforts from our guests

Dapper chaps

Lisa, formerly of the VM, with her man

Sadie of Vintage News

More amazing makeup

Hanson himself

Me and my chap, he got zombified shortly afterwards!

We, the Vintage Mafia!

GO HERE to see the whole album! I hope the thought of getting your portait taken in a giant heart by Hanson will be reason enough to come.

And if you fancy doing something a bit special during the day, another event I'm working on (but unfortunately won't be there due to Ric Rac preparations) is happening earlier. It's called Fashion Retrospective, and it's the only London Fashion Week catwalk show that the public can attend. It's also a vintage fashion show.

It's subtitled 'The History Behind Next Season', and aims to show how fashion is cyclical and influences today's designers. The models will be wearing outfits from the 1920s to the 1990s, all provided by some seriously top designers and London vintage shops to the stars and designed to reflect A/W '13 and S/S '14 trends. It's be fascinating for any of you fashion historians out there. Tickets are £20 from the Fashion Retrospective site, so do go if you're interested - I'm gutted I'm missing it.

EDIT: LFW Retrospective have just given me two pairs of tickets to give away! If you would like to come along yourself, please leave me a comment below saying so. I'll do a random draw on Friday morning and announce the winner!
